Plebe Parent Weekend (PPW) Guide
Plebe Parent Weekend is one of the most anticipated milestones of the year—a long-awaited reunion after Plebe Summer. It’s your first real opportunity to spend extended time with your Midshipman, hear their stories, and simply be together again.
The weekend is a mix of structure and freedom, but above all, it’s about reconnecting. After weeks of intense training and limited communication, your Plebe will be ready for good food, rest, and time with family.
What to Expect
Liberty typically begins Friday after the noon meal formation
This is a great opportunity to watch and experience the formation
You may also have a chance to see your Plebe’s room in Bancroft Hall
You’ll have extended time together throughout the weekend
Your Plebe will still sleep at Bancroft Hall
Your Plebe must follow all Academy rules, including:
Wearing USNA-issued PT gear while off the Yard
No civilian clothes during liberty
Your Plebe will likely be tired, hungry, and excited to see you
Plans can shift quickly—flexibility is key
How to Make the Most of the Weekend
Keep your schedule light and flexible (avoid mandatory plans)
Let your Plebe lead—ask ahead of time on the second phone call home:
“What do you want to do this weekend?”Prioritize rest, good meals, and downtime
Avoid over-scheduling
Consider coordinating a quick meetup with your Plebe’s sponsor family
This weekend is less about sightseeing and more about simply being together.
Getting around Annapolis
Traffic during Plebe Parent Weekend is very heavy
Allow extra time for everything
Downtown parking is limited—Hillman Garage is your best option
Consider parking at the stadium and using the shuttle system
Walking is often the easiest way to get around
Staying close to the United States Naval Academy makes logistics significantly easier.
Food is a big deal
After Plebe Summer, food becomes a highlight of the weekend.
Plan for:
Favorite restaurants (see our favorite restaurant lists)
Casual, easy meals
Snacks to take back to the yard
If you’re staying in, a home-cooked meal or takeout in a comfortable space can be exactly what your Plebe wants.
Why Your Stay Matters
Your Plebe has spent weeks in a highly structured, demanding environment. What they’ll want most is:
A place to relax and decompress
Comfortable seating and space to spread out
A quiet environment to recharge
The ability to just “be normal” for a little while
Hotels can feel tight and impersonal—having a full home makes a huge difference.
What to bring
iPad or personal devices your Plebe may want from home
(You will typically keep these for them unless their company allows devices after PPW)Favorite snacks and drinks
Toiletries — they may be missing
Chargers and small personal items
A Quick Reality Check
Your Plebe may:
Be more tired than expected—or even feel a little sick
Want to sleep… a lot, take a long, untimed hot shower
Become quieter as the weekend ends
This is completely normal—they’re mentally preparing to return to the yard
Or, the opposite—talk nonstop
All of it is normal. Let the weekend unfold naturally.
the moments that matter
Some of the best parts of PPW are the simplest:
Sitting together with coffee (they haven’t had coffee all summer!)
Watching a movie
Sharing a meal
Talking without a time limit
Looking at photos together (Thornton’s photos are always a favorite) and hearing their stories
These are the moments you’ll remember.
End of the weekend
Saying goodbye is easier than I-Day—but it can still be emotional.
Your Plebe will head back more confident, more settled, and ready to continue their journey.
